In the Shandong Museum sits a 6,000-year-old "adorable creature." Standing 21.6 cm tall, it is made of sandy red pottery, fully polished and coated in red slip. With a round face and pricked ears, an arched snout and open mouth, stocky limbs, and a short tail curling upward — it looks like both a pig and a dog, with an endearingly naive charm. In 1959, it emerged from the yellow earth of the Dawenkou Site. From that moment on, the secrets of Neolithic life were encoded within this small red pottery pot.
